The territorial police in Rukungiri have arrested 27-year-old Fred Nasasira for the alleged murder of 5-year-old Gift Amutuhaire, daughter of Samuel Niwamdinda, all residents of Kanyamitwe Cell, Central Ward, Kebisoni Town Council, Rukungiri district.
On June 16, 2024, around 13:00 hours, Gift Amutuhaire left her mother, Ntegyerize Sarah, and her elder brother, Ahurire Osbert (9 years old), at home to visit her grandmother, Korubaro Beatrice, approximately 100 meters away.
Upon arrival, she joined Fred Nasasira and Allan Akanyijuka in the farm where they gave the cows water. After the cows drank water, Allan fetched a bucket of water to take home, but Nasasira poured it out, prompting Allan to return to the well to fetch more water. As Allan returned from the well, he saw Nasasira carrying Gift on his back, moving uphill in the farm. Allan then continued taking water home but did not see them again.
A few minutes after delivering the water, Ntegyerize Sarah started looking for her daughter. Allan informed her that he had seen Nasasira carrying Gift from the well. In the evening, Nasasira returned home, ate supper, and disappeared. However, Gift was still missing.
On June 17, 2024, Ntegyerize Sarah reported a case of kidnapping at Kebisoni Police Station. Efforts to locate Gift continued, and on June 19, 2024, around 07:00 hours, her body was discovered buried in the bush.
The police were alerted, the crime scene was examined and documented, and Nasasira was arrested and taken into custody at Rukungiri Central Police Station. The body was sent for a postmortem at Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the alleged murder, and upon completion, Nasasira will be arraigned before the courts of law.
