Moreen Namanya, a 24-year-old single mother of two, narrowly escaped death on Sunday, January 5, 2025, during a secret labor at her home in Rusoroza B, Rusoroza Ward, Rwerere Town Council, Rukungiri District. Tragically, she lost her child during the ordeal.

The incident occurred around noon, and her survival is credited to the timely intervention of Javira Ainembabazi, an enrolled nurse at Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale. Javira was passing by the neighborhood when she encountered a group of women desperately seeking transport to take Moreen to a healthcare facility for emergency care.

Javira immediately provided voluntary assistance. She managed to deliver the stillborn child, which had become static within the mother’s womb, while Moreen was unconscious. This critical intervention saved Moreen’s life.

Moreen later recounted her ordeal, explaining that she had been experiencing fluid discharge since Wednesday. She was admitted to Nyakagyeme Health Center III for two days and referred to Bugangari Health Center IV on Saturday for further tests. Unfortunately, she was unable to travel to Bugangari due to a lack of transport. She admitted to having previously delivered her children at home.

Annah Kobusingye, Moreen’s mother, stated that she had arranged for transport to take her daughter to Bugangari Health Center IV on Monday. She criticized the government for its inadequate healthcare services and called for significant improvements to support rural communities.

Irene Birungi, a midwife at Nyakagyeme Health Center III, confirmed that the facility handles 30-45 deliveries monthly. However, she expressed concern over the high number of child deaths in remote areas, which rely heavily on outreach programs. She emphasized the challenges of transporting expectant mothers and appealed to charity organizations to provide support for maternal health care.

Javira Ainembabazi thanked God for enabling her to save Moreen’s life. She urged women to prioritize antenatal care services to ensure safe pregnancies and healthy deliveries.

Catherine Tumusime, the Mayor of Rwerere Town Council, described the incident as unfortunate. She called on women to enhance their awareness of health issues and encouraged collaboration with LC1 chairpersons and Village Health Teams (VHTs) to ensure quick responses to emergencies.
