After more than 14 years of legal battles, a long-standing land dispute between siblings in Bugangari Sub County, Rukungiri District, has finally been resolved peacefully.
The conflict between Isaac Turyahabwe and his sister Faith Kemigisha, both residents of Nyarubale Cell, Kyaburere Parish, had dragged through court for years until the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Rukungiri, Nsubuga Bewayo Steven, stepped in to mediate.
A reconciliation meeting held today, Friday 13th June 2025, at the family home brought together the warring parties, local leaders, and family members. The meeting, organized by the RDC in collaboration with the Sub County leadership, ended with both parties shaking hands and signing an agreement of settlement. Faith Kemigisha, the complainant, agreed to withdraw the case from court, marking an end to a bitter family conflict.
The RDC urged families to embrace proper planning, including writing wills, to reduce land-related conflicts which he blamed on the reluctance of many parents to prepare for inheritance matters.
Bugangari Sub County Chairperson Juston Byamukama expressed concern that most of the disputed land had already been sold off, yet the dispute continued over the small portion that remained.
Emily Ankunda, the Sub County Chief, highlighted that land disagreements and domestic violence remain the leading challenges affecting community stability in Bugangari.
Isaac Turyahabwe said his decision to reconcile was driven by a desire to avoid wasting time, money, and the burden of prolonged hostility.
The resolution has been hailed by local leaders as a sign of maturity and a step toward promoting peace and unity among families in the district.
