Tragedy struck Kilembe Sub-county in Kasese District on Tuesday night when a mudslide claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl, identified as Kabugho Mary.
The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. in Kibandama I, Kibandama Parish, as heavy rains battered the mountainous region.
According to police reports, Kabugho was sleeping in a separate room from her two brothers, who miraculously survived the disaster. The area has been grappling with intense rainfall that often triggers deadly mudslides and flash floods, particularly in elevated regions.
Kasese District Police spokesperson SP Nelson Tumushime expressed deep sorrow over the loss and urged residents to remain vigilant during the rainy season. “To avoid such devastating cases, early warning systems must be prioritized,” he said.
Police have issued the following safety guidelines:
- Stay away from areas known to be prone to mudslides.
- During heavy rains, seek higher ground or safer shelter immediately.
- Respond quickly to any sign of danger.
This incident adds to the growing concern over the impact of climate-related disasters in the Rwenzori sub-region. Authorities are calling for swift community action and increased investment in disaster preparedness.
