Over 600 youth from Kigezi sub-region gathered at Kitunga High School, Ntungamo District, for a three-day Young Life Youth Camp that concluded on December 16, 2024. The camp, which ran from December 14 to December 16, drew participants from the districts of Kabale, Rubanda, Rukiga, Kisoro, Rukungiri, Ntungamo, and Kanungu.
Speaking at the closing ceremony, Mr. Tayebwa Kenneth Kitakuzi, the Young Life Organization Director for Ntungamo District, encouraged youth to abandon immoral behaviors, work diligently, and draw closer to God to achieve success in life.
Mr. Tayebwa emphasized the importance of embracing Christian values and warned against behaviors such as alcoholism, casual relationships, and other forms of immorality. He highlighted the consequences of such actions, including unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and damaged reputations, which he said could derail the future of young people.
“The youth must focus on their education, remain committed to their goals, and make life choices aligned with their faith,” he advised.
During the camp, participants were taught four key aspects of life: spiritual, economic, cognitive, and social development. The program aimed to instill a sense of purpose and encourage positive decision-making among the youth.
Mr. Tayebwa expressed gratitude to Ruhaama North LC3 Chairperson Ivan Rwanyakibaale for mobilizing youth in Ntungamo and facilitating the use of Kitunga High School as the venue. He also thanked the school’s management for hosting the camp.
Niwampiire Shalon, Kigezi’s Young Life Coordinator and camp facilitator, thanked God for the success of the event and emphasized the importance of helping youth understand their purpose and align their lives with God’s teachings. She expressed concern over young girls being exploited by older men and urged them to respect themselves, prioritize education, and avoid relationships until they are mature enough to make informed decisions.
“Girls should focus on their studies and wait for responsible men in the future, rather than fall victim to those who only seek to use them,” Shalon said.
Another facilitator, Mr. Edmund Bariiyo, highlighted the camp’s mission to introduce adolescents to Jesus Christ and nurture their faith. He revealed that over 150 youth committed their lives to Christ during the camp, and the team would continue supporting them to ensure they remain steadfast in their new journey.
The Young Life Organization conducts similar programs in schools and churches to mobilize youth and guide them toward a brighter and more purposeful future.
