The Very Reverend Amatsiko Niwegariho, Dean of Emmanuel Cathedral Kinyasano, has issued a challenge to parents, urging them to prioritize instilling morals in their children for the sake of fostering strong churches and healthy families in the future.

His call came during his sermon at the farewell ceremony of Peron Aturinda, who served as a civilian support staff in the Uganda Military Police for a considerable period.

Rev. Niwegariho cited recent statistics indicating that 14 million Ugandans are struggling with depression, underscoring the need for parents to intensify efforts in guiding and counseling their children.

He attributed the rising levels of depression and delinquency to drug abuse, highlighting the detrimental effects of substance use on individuals’ cognitive faculties.

During the ceremony, a report from the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, presented by Major Denis Turyagyenda, revealed that Peron had been employed as an office attendant since 2020 and served in this capacity until her passing.

The report outlined her service at the Military Police Brigade headquarters in Makindye. Major Turyagyenda also read the postmortem report, which indicated that Peron succumbed to gunshot wounds sustained on Tuesday morning.

According to Reverend Benard Mwesigwa, Peron’s father, she was born in 1987 and grew up as a God-fearing, diligent, and respectful young woman.

Peroni was fatally shot by her boyfriend, Corporal Andebo Collins, a military police officer with Makindye Military Police, on Tuesday.

According to reports, on Tuesday around 07:00 hours, Corporal Andebo Collins, armed with an AK-47 rifle and dressed in civilian clothing, confronted Atulinda Peroni as she was getting onto a motorcycle (boda boda). He fired at her, causing severe injuries to her arm. Shortly after, Corporal Andebo Collins turned the weapon on himself and succumbed to his injuries upon reaching Mulago Hospital’s casualty ward,” stated ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police.

Today, she was laid to rest in Rukungiri district at the place of her ancestors.
