Police in Kanungu are currently in pursuit of a 30-year-old individual identified as Dan Kakyiga, a resident of Myakarambi village in Nyakatoma parish, Kihanda.

He is suspected of murdering a 67-year-old man, Stephen Begumisa, from Ibarya village in Nyakibuga parish, both within Kihanda sub-county in Kanungu district.

The alleged incident occurred on January 23, 2024, around 4:00 PM, where it is reported that the suspect brutally attacked the victim. Stephen Begumisa sustained severe injuries to his face and head, with additional injuries resulting in the amputation of his right arm.

The motive behind the crime is believed to be rooted in longstanding domestic conflicts between the suspect and the deceased. The disputes were reportedly related to accusations of witchcraft that the deceased allegedly directed towards the suspect and his family. Previous conflicts had led to the intervention of Kanungu police, resulting in a reconciliation and efforts to promote harmonious living.

A team of Homicide detectives and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) visited and documented the crime scene. Witness statements were obtained, and the body of the deceased was transported to Kanungu Health Centre IV mortuary for postmortem examination.

In connection to the ongoing investigation, the mother of the suspect has been apprehended to assist authorities. Meanwhile, the prime suspect, Dan Kakyiga, remains at large.
