Uganda’s Vice President, Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, has been elected unopposed as the Chairperson of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Veterans League in Aketa Parish, Ongongoja Sub County, Katakwi District.
Her election was officially declared by Parish Registrar Moses Otim during the NRM parish structure elections. Charles Amaitum was elected to serve as her deputy.
In her remarks, Alupo celebrated the unopposed election as a symbol of unity and mutual trust between her and the community. “This victory speaks volumes about the bond I share with my people and the confidence they have in my leadership,” she stated, expressing heartfelt gratitude to the 210 NRM members from the seven villages that constitute Aketa Parish.
The elections are part of a nationwide NRM grassroots reorganization effort aimed at filling 30 leadership positions per parish. These positions are considered instrumental in mobilizing political support and ensuring smooth implementation of government programs in preparation for upcoming national elections.
Vice President Alupo highlighted key infrastructure and development achievements in Katakwi, including the significant improvement in road connectivity that has reduced travel time between Katakwi and Soroti from over five hours to just 30 minutes. She also cited the operationalization of the Lake Bisina ferry and the ongoing rehabilitation of the railway line from Busia to the Congo border, set to boost regional trade.
Alupo encouraged the local population to adopt modern farming practices such as rearing heifers for milk and Kroilers for eggs, as a means to enhance household incomes. She warned against electoral bribery and urged local leaders to promote integrity and visionary leadership.
In her capacity as District Woman MP, Alupo urged citizens to embrace government initiatives like the Parish Development Model (PDM), Emyooga, Youth Fund, and Women Fund to foster economic empowerment. She concluded by calling for peaceful, transparent elections in 2026 and encouraged leaders to promote unity and community sensitization for national harmony.
