Residents and the business community in Rwenshama landing site, located by Lake Edward in Bwambara sub-county of Rukungiri district, are appealing to the government for urgent repairs to their road, which is currently in a deplorable condition.
The road connecting Rukungiri and Kanungu through Queen Elizabeth National Park to Kasese, with a channel leading to Rwenshama landing site, has become impassable due to numerous potholes, mud, and stagnant water. These conditions have made it extremely difficult for vehicles to traverse the road, endangering the lives of drivers.
Local residents like Isma Niwandinda, a fish trader, and boda boda cyclists Amon and Sadik, all from Rwenshama trading center, are facing constant breakdowns of their motorcycles due to the poor road conditions. This forces them to spend a significant portion of their earnings on the frequent maintenance and repairs of their motorcycles.
Chris Kagayano, the chairperson of Bwambara sub-county, emphasizes the need for urgent attention to the state of the Rwenshama road. He points out that it not only disrupts the business of traders but also lacks an alternative route.
Kenneth Niwagaba, the local council two chairperson of Rweshama parish, highlights that the road has undergone maintenance in the past. However, one of the key issues is that the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has not consistently addressed drainage systems to facilitate water drainage. This oversight results in the rapid deterioration of the road after maintenance.
In response to concerns about the poor state of the Rwenshama road, the political assistant to the Member of Parliament for Rujumbura County, who also serves as the Minister of Security, Isaac Kaharuza, states that the responsibility for road repairs lies with UNRA’s Kasese office. He is actively coordinating with them to expedite the necessary work.
Isaac Kaharuza explains that the renovation of the road was delayed due to security concerns related to ADF (Allied Democratic Forces) activities in Queen Elizabeth National Park. However, with improved security conditions, the road is expected to be restored to a suitable state soon.
