Teachers under the Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) have stayed away from schools on the first day of the third term, demanding government action on salary increments.

UNATU General Secretary, Philbert Baguma, confirmed in a phone interview with Boona Radio that no teacher will return to work until the government addresses their pay concerns.

“Regarding the industrial action, we haven’t received any feedback concerning Art teachers,” Mr. Baguma said.
“If the government fails to respond to our requests for salary increments, there is no option but to direct teachers to stay home until they act, as we had previously informed them.”

He added that if the government appears indifferent, it must explain to parents and Ugandans why it is mistreating children who deserve better.

At the district level, Rukungiri UNATU Chairperson, Lovence Komujuni Biriho, also confirmed that none of the teachers reported to school today. She noted that, to date, they have not received any positive response from the union’s public relations office regarding salary negotiations.

“We are prepared to remain at home and boycott teaching duties for even a full year if the government does not respond,” Ms. Biriho said.

The teachers’ action comes amid ongoing calls for a review of salaries, particularly for Art teachers, who have long voiced concerns about inadequate pay.
