The Prime Minister of Uganda, Rt Hon Robinah Nabanja, has announced plans to address the potholes along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road, following concerns raised by Hon. Midius Natukunda Kaharata, the Rukungiri district Woman Member of Parliament.

During Thursday’s parliamentary session chaired by Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, Hon. Natukunda expressed worry over the deteriorating state of the road, particularly at Kiborogota, where a pregnant woman tragically lost her life while en route to give birth.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, Hon. Natukunda emphasized the need for immediate action, citing the adverse effects on transportation in the region due to delayed maintenance by the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA). Both she and Deputy Speaker Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa noted similar concerns regarding the poor condition of the Mbarara-Ishaka-Bushenyi road.

In response, Prime Minister Nabanja assured that the Cabinet had prioritized the rehabilitation and maintenance of existing tarmac roads with potholes. She stressed the importance of preserving and improving current infrastructure rather than solely focusing on constructing new roads. Among the identified roads slated for rehabilitation are the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road and the Kampala-Jinja road, both plagued by potholes.

As a result of this directive, efforts to repair the potholes along the Rukungiri-Ntungamo road, particularly at Kiborogota, are currently underway, as confirmed by our correspondent on the ground.
