Kanungu District is poised for a digital revolution following the successful completion of a groundbreaking digital training program that equipped 350 participants with essential digital skills.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, in collaboration with the Chinese government, concluded with a colorful ceremony at Kanungu Playground. Minister Baryomunsi was joined by Zhang, the Chinese Ambassador to Uganda, and Ghako, a representative from China, to present certificates to the graduates.

The program, which targeted youths, women, persons with disabilities (PWDs), professionals, DJs, artists, and journalists, marked a significant milestone in bridging the digital divide. Participants hailed from various sub-counties in Kanungu District, with each group empowered to use their newfound skills for personal and community growth.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Baryomunsi highlighted Uganda’s growing partnership with China, which aims to fast-track digital transformation and infrastructural development. He announced that plans have been finalized to begin tarmacing the Kanyantorogo-Bwindi and Kanungu-Hamurwa roads, a development he said will boost connectivity and regional growth.

Ambassador Zhang reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s development, revealing plans to establish a sister-city partnership between Kanungu Town Council and a city in China. This collaboration will focus on enhancing tourism, ICT, and other critical sectors.

Ambrose Mwesigye, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kanungu, representing the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development, emphasized the government’s ambition to empower 10,000 entrepreneurs nationwide. This initiative seeks to increase public access to technology, with a particular focus on supporting women, youth, and PWDs.

Kanungu District Education Officer, Shaman Adam, praised the training program, citing its positive impact on educational techniques, time management, and socio-economic development.

The graduates expressed heartfelt gratitude to Minister Baryomunsi and pledged to share their knowledge with others, ensuring a ripple effect across the district.

As Kanungu strides toward a digitally driven future, this program serves as a testament to the power of international collaboration and government-led initiatives to transform lives and communities.
