Police in Mbarara District have arrested two suspects in connection with stealing number plates from motor vehicles.
The suspects, identified as Asiimwe Josephat, a 30-year-old businessman from Bwambara, Rukungiri District, and Nakunda Javira, a 34-year-old businessman from Buremba, Kazo District, are in police custody.
According to authorities, the suspects are accused of stealing number plates from vehicles parked in various trading centers in Mbarara District during the night of November 26-27, 2024. The suspects allegedly left a phone number at the scene, instructing victims to call and pay a ransom for the return of their number plates.
Acting on intelligence, police tracked the suspects to Rukungiri District, where they were apprehended. Upon interrogation, the suspects led police to the location where the stolen number plates were hidden. Seven number plates were recovered and are now being held as evidence at Bwizibwera Police Station.
The suspects are set to face prosecution in court. SP Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrests and recovery, assuring the public that police remain committed to curbing crime in the region.
Investigation into the matter continues.
