In a shocking incident that unfolded on the morning of November 5, 2023, the peaceful community of Kanyankyende cell, Nyabitete Parish, Bugangari sub-county in Rukungiri District was left in disbelief as a 15-year-old boy, Muhwezi Yusuf, met a tragic end in a gruesome murder.
The incident transpired around 10:00 AM on that fateful day when Muhwezi Yusuf and his friend, Niwagaba Bashir, were out grazing cattle on Nyakinengo Hill, Nyakinengo cell. It was a seemingly normal day until a sinister figure emerged, armed with a knife.
The perpetrator, identified as Asiimwe, the son of Kenneth, appeared and, upon noticing Byamukama Benon’s departure to Rwibare church for prayers, concealed himself behind a tree.
As Byamukama Benon distanced himself from the scene, Asiimwe lured Muhwezi Yusuf down the hill into a valley while leaving Niwagaba Bashir uphill. Shortly after, Bashir heard the horrifying screams of his friend for help but was too frightened to investigate. He swiftly made his way to a nearby home to inform Anet and another woman about the distressing incident. He then alerted Tukahirwa Jane and Tumushabe Jane about the situation.
Their collective distress calls attracted the attention of numerous residents who rushed to the scene, where they made a gruesome discovery. Muhwezi Yusuf’s lifeless body was found in the Nyakinengo River waters, bearing a deep cut on his neck. It was a chilling sight that sent shockwaves throughout the community.
In the wake of this heinous crime, Habasa Wilbroad, the area chairperson of the Kanyankyende cell, promptly reported the case to Bugangari police station. A case of murder was officially registered under SD Ref: 05/05/11/2023.
The crime scene was thoroughly examined, documented, and investigated by dedicated detectives, including the District Scene of Crime Officer (D/SOCO) and the District Criminal Investigation Officer (D/CID/O).
The prime suspect in this horrifying incident, Asiimwe, is currently on the run, and law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing leads to apprehend him. The body of the victim, Muhwezi Yusuf, was conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for a postmortem examination to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Inquiries are ongoing as the community remains in a state of shock and mourning the tragic loss of a young life.
