A tragic road accident took place on Sunday at approximately 10:00 am in Kacerere quaters B, Kacerere Ward, Kacerere Town Council, along the Marrum road in Bufundi Muko, Rubanda district. The accident resulted in the loss of one life and left several individuals injured.

The accident involved a blue Isuzu Elf vehicle with the registration number UAZ 412P. Following the incident, the driver fled the scene.

The vehicle was reportedly en route from Bufundi to Mukatasa village in Muko sub-county and was carrying approximately 45 to 50 passengers who were on their way to attend the funeral of a teacher. This teacher had sadly passed away in another accident that occurred on November 3, 2023, within Rubanda district.

While traveling through Kacerere Town Council along the Muko Bufundi road, the vehicle hit a pothole, causing it to veer to the left. The hanger bars on that side couldn’t withstand the weight, resulting in their breakage, which led to passengers falling from the vehicle. Tragically, one passenger named Nshemererwe fell and was fatally struck by the rear tire of the vehicle.

Several other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly taken to Bufundi Health Center III for initial medical treatment and later discharged.

The primary factors behind the accident, as per the police report, were overloading of the vehicle and poor road conditions.

Law enforcement authorities, led by Assistant Superintendent of Police (Asp) Wakatuma Alamanzani, the District Traffic Officer for Rubanda, and with the assistance of Asp Okello Solomon, the Officer in Charge of Muko Police Station, visited the accident scene to document the incident. The body of the deceased was transported to Bufundi Health Center III for a postmortem examination.

The vehicle involved in the accident was removed from the scene and taken to Rubanda Central Police Station, pending inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV). The authorities are actively working to apprehend the driver, who is currently evading capture, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
