In a devastating incident early this morning, a single fatal accident along the Kabale-Kisoro road in Rubanda district has left three individuals dead and several others injured. The accident, which occurred around 5:00 AM at Rwarubaya village, Nyarurambi parish, Muko subcounty, has sent shockwaves through the local community.
The motor vehicle involved, identified as a Tata bearing registration number UAQ 111W and white in color, was reportedly transporting sacks of Irish potatoes and maize seeds from Isingiro to Kisoro. Tragically, it lost control while negotiating a sharp corner, resulting in a catastrophic overturn.
The victims have been identified as Nkurunziza Nelson, aged 36, from Kabande village, Tendere parish, Nyarusiza subcounty in Kisoro district, Nsenga Gideon, aged 27, from Kabare village, Rukongi Parish, and Nsanzimuhire Micheal, aged 26, from Nyagihenge village, Rukongi Parish, both also from Nyarusiza subcounty. They all succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
According to preliminary investigations by law enforcement, the accident was attributed to poor mechanical conditions of the vehicle, specifically brake failure. Eyewitnesses reported that the victims were covered by sacks of Irish potatoes at the time of the accident, exacerbating the severity of their injuries.
Authorities have confirmed that the driver of the vehicle, as well as three other passengers, managed to escape from the scene before the arrival of law enforcement. Efforts are currently underway to locate and apprehend them for further questioning.
Upon receiving notification of the incident, law enforcement swiftly responded, with Assistant Superintendent of Police (Asp) Wakatuma Alamanzani leading the investigation. The bodies of the deceased were retrieved from underneath the sacks of Irish potatoes and a postmortem examinations were conducted before being released to their respective families for burial.
Inquiries into the accident are ongoing, with the vehicle involved towed and parked at Rubanda Police Station pending inspection by relevant authorities.
