A tragic accident claimed one life and left another person severely injured after a fuel tanker lost control and burst into flames on the Mbarara-Kabale Highway.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. at Kyanamira Trading Center on Saturday, October 26, 2024, involving a Nissan semi-trailer fuel tanker with registration UAQ 912N/SSD 351Y.

The tanker, driven by Onyango Geoffrey, 34, a Kenyan national from Eldoret, reportedly suffered a brake failure while en route from Mbarara to Kabale town, causing it to overturn and ignite instantly. Geoffrey managed to escape the vehicle, though he sustained severe burns and was rushed to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, where he is receiving treatment. Tragically, his turnman, 20-year-old Kenyan national Onyango Roggers, went missing until the fire was extinguished, after which his remains were discovered in the wreckage.

The Police Fire Brigade and rescue unit responded promptly, successfully containing the fire before it could spread to nearby structures, though three communication poles were damaged. The accident scene was investigated by Cpl Kambale Isaac and his team. ASP Elly Maate, PRO of Kigezi, confirmed that inquiries are ongoing.
