The territorial police in Kisoro District are investigating a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a teenager and left four others injured. The incident occurred on Monday, November 25, 2024, at around 12:00 PM in Michingo village along Gashumba Road, Kisoro Municipality.
The accident involved a purple Fuso truck, registration number UBM 195Q, which was transporting pavers from Kisoro town to Gasiza Trading Centre. Preliminary investigations indicate that the truck experienced mechanical failure while ascending a hill. Its propeller shaft detached, causing the vehicle to roll backward and overturn.
The deceased has been identified as Brian Niyonshima, a 15-year-old resident of Murambi village, Rwaramba Parish, Nyakinama Sub-County in Kisoro District.
The injured victims, all residents of Rwaramba in Nyakinama Sub-County, are: Subiza Isaac, 11 years, Maniriho Owen, 15 years, Gachiro Nyiromurengyeza, 11 years, and Junior, whose age is yet to be established
The injured were rushed to Mutorele Hospital for treatment, while the deceased was taken to Kisoro Hospital mortuary for a postmortem.
A team led by ASP Kushaba Micheal and Sgt. Mbabazi James visited the accident scene, documented evidence, and prepared a sketch map. The Fuso truck was towed to Kisoro Central Police Station for inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV). Efforts are underway to trace the driver, whose identity is not yet known.
Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed that inquiries are ongoing.
The police have urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in sound mechanical condition to prevent such avoidable accidents.
