The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, has called on Members of Parliament-elect to remain loyal to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and support the party’s position on the leadership of Parliament.
He said that while cooperation with other political parties exists and is welcome, key parliamentary positions are determined within the NRM caucus to ensure effective governance.
Rt Hon Tayebwa said MPs are expected to support Rt Hon Anita Annet Among to continue serving as Speaker of Parliament for the current term, with himself remaining as Deputy Speaker. He added that this will be his final term as Deputy Speaker and urged MPs-elect to stick to the party’s position for the good of government business.
The Deputy Speaker made the remarks during a funeral service in Rukiga District, where mourners from Kashambya and other parts of the country had gathered to pay last respects to Noreda Bangirana, the mother of Hon Anifa Kawooya, the State Minister of Health in charge of General Duties.
Preaching at the service, the Bishop Emeritus, Rt Rev George Katwesigye, urged Christians to always be prepared and to plan how they will leave this world while still alive. He reminded believers that death is inevitable and encouraged them to live righteous lives and leave behind a legacy grounded in faith and good works.
The State Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development in charge of General Duties, Hon Henry Musasizi, echoed the Deputy Speaker’s sentiments, saying he and others are ready to support the continued leadership of Rt Hon Anita Annet Among and Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa. He said he believes the two leaders can work effectively together to guide Parliament.
The service took place at Nyaruziba Trading Centre in Kashambya, Rukiga District, and was attended by several government dignitaries, family members, and mourners from across the country.
