At least four lives were saved following a tragic single-vehicle road crash involving a Trinity bus along the Kabale–Mbarara Highway in Rukiga District, thanks to the quick response of traffic police and emergency medical teams.

Initial fears that the accident had claimed many lives were eased after police confirmed that three passengers died on the spot, while four others survived with injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital.

The accident occurred at Bukinda–Kakatunda, where the bus traveling from Kigali to Kampala reportedly lost control on a slope and slid into a water trench. During the incident, passengers attempted to escape, leading to fatal injuries for the deceased. However, timely intervention prevented further loss of life.

Senior police officers, including the Regional Police Commander for Kigezi SSP Alex Wabwire, RTO SP Mahad Juma, and the Rukiga District Traffic Team, promptly visited the scene to coordinate rescue operations and ensure order.

The injured passengers, including the driver, were swiftly evacuated using a Ministry of Health ambulance, highlighting effective coordination between the police and health services.

Police have attributed the primary cause of the crash to over-speeding, and investigations are ongoing. The vehicle has since been towed to Rukiga Central Police Station pending inspection.

Authorities have used the incident to renew calls for responsible driving, especially on slopes and highways, while commending emergency responders whose timely action saved lives and minimized further tragedy.
