Residents of Nyakisoroza trading center in Kacence Parish, Nyakishenyi Subcounty, Rukungiri District, are voicing their concerns over a surge in theft cases in the area.

Niwagaaba Rodgers, a resident of Kababale Cell who charges batteries in Nyakisoroza trading center, reported that in the early hours of Tuesday , around 12:30 am, thieves forcibly entered his shop and stole a sum of 280,000 Ugandan Shillings along with various other items.

According to Rodgers, these criminals operate in groups of 3-5 individuals, equipped with metals to break doors or window panes and cut through grills to gain access to houses. He emphasized that the perpetrators are known to the local residents, but law enforcement has been unsuccessful in apprehending them.

Rodgers highlighted that the criminal activities extend beyond breaking into shops; they also engage in theft of livestock, such as cattle, and agricultural produce like bananas.

Twesigomwe Deudeo, who runs a wine business in the same trading center, shared a similar story. Thieves broke into his shop during the same night, making off with several belongings, including a jerrycan of wine. Deudeo mentioned that these unidentified thieves strike when shop owners have left for their residences, systematically moving from house to house.

Annet Natukunda, another victim, expressed her dissatisfaction, stating that these thieves are continually jeopardizing their lives. She recounted a break-in at her shop where an unspecified amount of money and numerous belongings were taken.

Despite having a security meeting on Monday where the names of suspects were disclosed, Natukunda noted with disappointment that there has been no tangible impact, and the thefts persist. She urgently appeals for prompt action from the relevant authorities.
