The Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Parliamentary SACCO, Methods Mureebe Muhanuka, has called on SACCO administrators in Rukungiri District to embrace policies that govern savings and credit cooperatives and actively participate at the national level to safeguard their rights and privileges.

Muhanuka made the remarks on March 21, 2026, while officiating at the 20th Annual General Meeting of Nyakibale Development SACCO Limited, held at Riverside Hotel in Eastern Division, Rukungiri Municipality, and attended by zonal delegates.

He urged SACCO leaders to allocate funds for participation in national lobby and advocacy platforms organized by the Uganda Cooperative Savings and Credit Union and the Uganda Cooperative Alliance. He emphasized the importance of presenting a unified voice in advocating for fair treatment, particularly in matters related to taxation and regulatory frameworks. He also referenced ongoing efforts to resist proposals to have SACCOs licensed by the Bank of Uganda, noting the need for stronger involvement from SACCOs in Rukungiri District in national engagements.

Muhanuka further advised SACCO administrators to streamline general meeting procedures and adopt clear guidelines to address dormant accounts. He said this would help promote active membership participation and strengthen the performance of the institutions.

Nyakibale SACCO Chairperson, Fortunate Akanyihayo Rukundo, expressed appreciation for the steady growth in membership and savings. She also announced a new initiative to distribute fruit tree seedlings to members, aimed at promoting environmental conservation and enhancing household food security.

The General Secretary, Ziine Narcisio, revealed plans to introduce loan products tailored for women that will not require physical collateral. The initiative is intended to improve access to credit for women who often face challenges in meeting traditional loan security requirements.

Chairperson of the Supervisory Committee, Cornelius Byarugaba, reassured members about the safety of their savings and disclosed plans to improve service delivery through faster banking systems. These include the introduction of agent banking services and mobile-based account monitoring to enhance convenience and reliability.

Members of the SACCO welcomed the fruit tree planting initiative, noting its potential to support environmental sustainability and improve food security at the household level. Others commended the SACCO for its efforts to advance financial inclusion, particularly for women, by addressing long-standing barriers to accessing financial services.
