To extend health services to residents of Rwerere Town Council in Rukungiri District, residents, and well-wishers have successfully acquired 2 acres of land for the construction of a Health Centre III.
Mrs. Catherine Tumusiime, the Mayor of Rwerere Town Council, expressed her satisfaction with the community’s efforts. She revealed that, through collective fundraising by residents, well-wishers, and individuals from Rwerere living in Kampala, they raised 80 million UGX to secure the land.
She explained that the town council previously lacked sufficient land for the health center, which is mandated by government policy for each town council. The next step will be to fundraise for land to establish a seed school.
In 2022, a fundraising event at Hotel Africana, organized by Rwerere residents in Kampala, raised over 50 million UGX. Additionally, 20 million UGX was contributed by the Ministry of Local Government, with further support of 18 million UGX from Hon. Gen. (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi.
Sunday Masozera, a resident of Rwerere Town Council, thanked the community for their dedication to local development. He noted that the initiative to fund the Health Centre III highlights the community’s commitment and concern for their well-being.
Mayor Catherine Tumusiime also extended her gratitude to Patrick Kamugisha and other residents who played a key role in mobilizing funds. She mentioned that the town council will soon approach the government for further support to develop the health center, now that the land is secured.
Rwerere Town Council was established in 2018, following its elevation from Nyakagyeme Sub County. The town council has a population of over 4,000 people, organized into 9 cells and 3 wards.
