Residents and local leaders in Rwanja West Parish, Rurehe Subcounty, Mitooma District, have expressed concerns over the lack of essential social services, particularly poor road infrastructure, water scarcity, and the absence of electricity.
Speaking with our reporter, the Rwanja West LC2 Chairperson, Barigye Augustine, voiced his frustration over the severe lack of these services, which has hindered economic development. He specifically highlighted the impassable state of Nyakishojwa Road but commended residents for engaging in communal efforts to improve the area.
Barigye also raised concerns about the absence of both governmental and non-governmental development projects, such as World Compassion, which provides aid to the needy and offers scholarships. He noted that while such services are available in neighboring areas like Rukungiri, Rwanza West remains neglected.
Begumisa Silagi, the Ntungamo LC1 Chairperson, echoed similar concerns, emphasizing the lack of clean water, proper roads, and electricity, which have contributed to the community’s underdevelopment. He called on higher authorities to take immediate action.
Rurehe LC3 Chairperson, Evelyn Ainebyona, acknowledged these challenges, stating that the problem is not limited to Rwanza West but affects several other parishes in Rurehe. She confirmed that they have written multiple requests to higher authorities seeking intervention.
Meanwhile, our reporter contacted Ruhinda South MP, Donozio Kahonda, who confirmed the longstanding issues in Rurehe, particularly concerning water and electricity.
He explained that an assessment by the National Water and Sewerage Corporation identified technical issues with water source pressure, making it difficult to distribute water to the affected areas. As a solution, they have requested National Water to establish an alternative source.
Regarding electricity, he confirmed that the World Bank-funded project for electricity distribution in Mitooma is set to begin soon. However, the process has been delayed as they await compensation funds for affected residents. He urged the community to remain patient as the project moves forward.
