Local leaders in Rwanja East parish have raised concerns over the increasing cases of domestic violence in families and are set to organize a general meeting of all cell chairpersons this Thursday.

Speaking to Boona Radio, the Rwanja East Parish Councillor, Mr. Tweyongyere Fred, reported that domestic violence has become a long-standing daily challenge affecting families, creating permanent wrangles among family members and burdening local leaders who struggle to resolve them.

With disappointment, Mr. Fred cited a case in Rwongora cell, where four brothers allegedly attempted to kill their sister, Kendiga Dina, on three occasions over disputes on sharing their parents’ land. They also accused her of witchcraft. The brothers later disappeared after the incidents.

Similarly, the Karukare LC1 Chairperson, Mr. Mbarimu Spriano, was attacked in his home and badly beaten by hooligans while attempting to resolve family wrangles. This has forced local leaders to join efforts and organize a joint security meeting scheduled for Thursday, 21st May 2025, which will bring together all cell chairpersons from Rwanja East and Katagata parishes to seek lasting solutions.

The Rwanja East LC2 Chairperson, Mr. Byambwenu George, also raised concerns over the persistent family violence in the area. He highlighted the same case in the family of the late Kurimanywa Festo in Rwongora cell, where four brothers have allegedly tried three times to kill their sister over land-related disputes and suspicions of witchcraft. He confirmed that a joint meeting involving leaders from both Rwanja East and Katagata parishes will be held to address the matter.

Mr. Byambwenu further reported growing cases of hooliganism and idleness among youth in the area, noting that many boys have prioritized alcoholism and drug abuse. He also blamed some LC1 chairpersons for negligence, accusing them of failing to fulfill their responsibilities, thereby worsening the situation.
