Residents of Nyamuniga Cell, Kihanga Parish, Buhunga Subcounty, Rukungiri District, have decried the persistent lack of electricity, noting that their area has never had a single power line, while poles are seen only along the roadsides and at Ikuniro Catholic Church
Speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson of LC1 of Nyamuniga Cell, Yorokamu Twinamastiko, expressed his frustration, saying they have never been included in the plan to receive electricity services and have been kept waiting for years.
He further said this has slowed down businesses, citing that some children studied welding, but because there is no electricity in Nyamuniga Trading Centre, they are unemployed. He added that residents even fail to get places to charge their phones.
Residents of Nyamuniga Cell, Jackson Mujinya and Jackline Asiimwe, also raised their concerns, saying they are badly off to the extent that they lack places to charge their phones and must travel long distances to do so.
They added that their area is in total darkness, which gives thieves the advantage of stealing people’s property, such as goats. They said those in charge only distributed poles to Kihanga Cell, leaving Nyamuniga without any.
Ronald Turyamureba, another resident, told our reporter that poles were put in Karisozo Trading Centre, Ikuniro, and Kihanga, but never reached Nyamuniga, leaving them in total darkness.
He added that they walk long distances to access electricity services, such as taking their coffee and other produce to factories in Karisozo and Buyanja, which would have been easier if they had electricity in their area. He called on the government, through their leaders, to provide electricity services to improve their well-being.
However, speaking to our reporter, the Chairperson of LC3 Buhunga Subcounty, Aunt Benon Mugisha, said all he knows about the electricity project is that Minister Jim Muhwezi promised it would be worked on. He admitted that the time frame given to them has expired but urged people to be patient and wait.
