Rukungiri district and municipal authorities continue to face severe public criticism due to the deplorable condition of Rwamahwa Health Center four.
Situated in the Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality, this health center was originally established during the 1970s under Dr. Milton Obote’s government. However, the current administration has not prioritized its renovation and modernization.
Like many other facilities established by previous governments, Rwamahwa Health Center lacks adequate space, and essential medical services are conspicuously absent. This compels residents of Rukungiri district to turn to private hospitals within the district for their healthcare needs.
Our reporter conducted a thorough visit to the facility and discovered that certain infrastructure, particularly the ceiling in the Male Ward, poses a serious risk of collapsing on patients seeking treatment. Residents who spoke to our reporter anonymously placed the blame on the inadequate efforts of both municipal and district leaders to advocate for the facility’s refurbishment.
They emphasized that while the government recently unveiled plans to construct a modern theater, this alone does not address the fundamental issue, as the facility lacks essential medications, forcing them to seek medical services from private facilities.
An undisclosed local leader from Rukungiri municipality expressed frustration, stating that all candidates who have vied for significant political positions in Rukungiri district have promised to elevate the facility to hospital status, but these pledges have consistently gone unfulfilled.
Attempts to obtain comments from political leaders in Rukungiri proved futile, as they were unwilling to provide a response to the matter at the time of reporting.
