The Rukungiri district manager of Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL), Eng. Asiimwe Alex, has issued a stern warning to residents about ongoing cyber scams and illegal electricity activities in the district.
Eng. Alex revealed that several customers have reported receiving phone calls from individuals using the UEDCL name, demanding money for a so-called meter upgrade promotion. The scammers reportedly contact customers via the number 0200900148, asking for payment to upgrade electric meters.
He cautioned residents never to respond or send money through mobile money, emphasizing that these demands are illegal. “UEDCL will never request payments in this manner,” Eng. Alex said, urging customers to report any suspicious calls immediately either at the UEDCL office or to the police.
Eng. Alex also highlighted the rising risk of cybercrime related to electricity services and stressed the importance of vigilance. “Always report to the police or seek guidance from UEDCL if someone asks for illegal payments,” he added.
In addition, Eng. Alex warned the public about illegal electricians operating in the district. Some of these individuals impersonate UEDCL workers to connect households to electricity illegally, while others steal transformers, cut wires, or climb poles, particularly in rural areas.
Residents are urged to report any suspicious activity to the police or via UEDCL’s free line 0800 203 088, and to cooperate fully in protecting the community’s electricity infrastructure. “This is your electricity. Protect it, and work with us to stop illegal activities,” Eng. Alex emphasized.
