Rukungiri Town Council Primary School, situated in Eastern Division of Rukungiri Municipality, received a significant boost today with the donation of 50 bags of cement from the Rukungiri Municipality legislator, Hon Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa. This generous contribution aims to facilitate the construction of a three-classroom block at the school.

The school’s headmistress, Edith Natweta, emphasized the urgent need for additional classrooms as the current situation was dire. Over 100 nursery pupils were utilizing makeshift classrooms constructed from tree offcuts, which not only were small but also posed risks to the safety of the students.

Natweta explained that the school had taken matters into their own hands by initiating a construction project valued at 99 million. In September of the previous year, a fundraising event was organized by parents to gather funds for the construction project. During this event, Hon Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, though absent, pledged 50 bags of cement to support the school’s construction efforts.

Expressing gratitude for the timely donation, Rutahigwa shared his concern for government schools in the municipality using substandard classrooms. He reiterated his commitment as a leader to support various schools in infrastructure development. He expressed the intention to continue this support to elevate education standards in Rukungiri Municipality.

Herbert Mugabe, the chairperson of the School Management Committee, and Nyareba Fulugence, the chairperson of the Parent-Teacher Association at Rukungiri Town Council Primary School, lauded the legislator’s donation. They emphasized that the contribution would aid in constructing classrooms, alleviating congestion, and relocating the nursery section from the makeshift classrooms in the upcoming term.

Acknowledging that some leaders fail to fulfill their pledges, Mugabe and Fulugence appreciated the legislator for delivering the promised cement promptly. The donation arrived at a crucial time when parents, in collaboration with school authorities, had already initiated the construction of the classroom blocks to create adequate space for pupils in the next term.

Alex Karumuna, the chairperson of Kifunjo village, highlighted the positive impact of the new classrooms on providing a conducive learning environment. He anticipates that the increased space will lead to a rise in school enrollment, further enhancing the educational experience for the pupils.
