Residents of Rukungiri District and Ugandans at large have been called upon to actively participate in the ongoing National Identity Card renewal exercise for their own future benefit.

The mass exercise, which officially kicked off on May 27, 2025, will run for six months and is being conducted at all sub-county headquarters across the country. It aims to renew expired National Identity cards, replace lost ones, and carry out several other related services—all free of charge.

According to Jonan Musinguzi, the NIRA Registrar for Rukungiri, individuals do not need to return to their home districts to renew or replace their ID cards. He clarified that those working or residing in other districts can conveniently access the service from the nearest sub-county headquarters.

Musinguzi also emphasized the inclusion of children below the age of 15 in the registration process. Although they are not yet eligible for National Identity Cards, they are assigned National Identification Numbers (NINs) in preparation for full registration once they reach the required age.

He stressed the importance of the National ID, noting that it is a critical document required in various sectors including hospitals, banks, and for job applications. He encouraged residents of Rukungiri and the wider Ugandan population not to miss this opportunity to update or replace their identification credentials.

The exercise is part of a broader government effort to ensure every Ugandan has a valid and updated National Identity Card, which serves as a key tool in accessing government and private services.
