Efforts to promote young talent in Rukungiri have received a boost as 24 primary school pupils were on Friday, 3rd May 2025, flagged off to represent the district at the National Kids Athletics Championships for under-12 and under-14 categories.

The national event, set to run from 4th to 14th May 2025 in Kabale District, will bring together the best young athletes from across the country.

Presiding over the flag-off ceremony at Rukungiri District Headquarters, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Mr. Steven Nsubuga Bewaayo underscored the importance of nurturing young talent. He emphasized that co-curricular activities are a key part of government policy aimed at holistic education.

He further urged the athletes to remain disciplined if they are to achieve commendable results.

Solomon Arinaitwe, the Inspector of Primary Schools in charge of Games and Sports for Rukungiri, said the pupils were selected from various zones after a competitive district athletics event held on 16th April at Rukungiri Main Stadium.

He also appreciated the role of parents and schools in supporting these budding athletes.

The young athletes are expected to carry the hopes of Rukungiri District as they showcase their abilities on the national stage, with local leaders and educators alike hopeful that this exposure will inspire even more investment in sports at the grassroots level.
