Parents of 10-year-old Miria Atukunda, who was born with a disability, are beaming with joy after receiving a modern wheelchair for their daughter from Rukobarwomunda for Community Mobilization Development (RUCOMODE), a non-governmental organization funded by Rukungiri Municipality legislator Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa.
Miria’s parents, Alex Tugabirwe and Speech Kyokunda from Nyakihanga Village in Kyatoko Ward, Rukungiri Municipality, shared with our reporter that Miria’s disability began in childhood, progressively worsening to the point where she was unable to sit, walk, or stand. Without a wheelchair, she was unable to participate in daily activities or attend school, which left her family in a desperate situation, as they could not afford a wheelchair.
Her mother expressed her gratitude, noting that caring for Miria had been challenging, especially carrying her on her back. With the new wheelchair, Miria can now play with other children while her mother attends to household chores.
Residents of Nyakihanga Village, including Matsiko Onesimus and Hilder Naturinda, expressed their relief and appreciation for the support. They are thankful to the legislator for providing this much-needed aid to Miria’s family.
Hon. Rutahigwa explained that his decision to assist persons with disabilities (PWDs) is part of his commitment to upholding their rights. Recognizing that many individuals cannot afford wheelchairs on their own, he aims to extend support to more PWDs in Rukungiri Municipality through his community-based organization. As a medical specialist, he evaluates patients before providing aid based on their needs. He is also seeking support for his efforts in the upcoming 2026 elections.
