In preparation to join the rest of the world in commemorating World Rabies Day, Rukungiri District is currently carrying out a mass rabies vaccination exercise to fight against the disease.

In a telephone interview with our reporter yesterday, the Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer, Dr. Johnson Ninsiima, said the vaccination campaign started on Monday, 1st September 2025, in Buyanja Subcounty. He noted that from there, the team will proceed to Nyakagyeme and other subcounties.

Dr. Ninsiima emphasized that the vaccination is free of charge and urged all residents with dogs and cats to bring them for vaccination.

He expressed concern over Ugandans who fail to respond to government programs, especially those aimed at fighting preventable diseases, saying such reluctance slows down community development.

Dr. Ninsiima further explained that rabies does not only affect dogs and cats but can also infect humans if they are bitten by unvaccinated pets. He assured the public that the district has enough vaccines to cover all pets and appealed to residents to cooperate with the exercise.

Every 28th September, the world commemorates World Rabies Day with the aim of raising public awareness on how to eliminate rabies.
