Rukungiri district Roads committee has attributed the breaking down of bridges at different rivers in Rujumbura County to farmers who do farming near these rivers where soil ends blocking pipes.
According to the chairperson of the Rukungiri roads committee, Hon. Dr. Elisa Rutahigwa, different bridges and roads in Rujumbura were inspected including the Mabuunu Bridge and Kanyegayegye Bridge in Ikuniro in the Buhunga sub-county which is in a sorry state
Other bridges are Omukyishenyi Bridge and Nyabutegure Bridge in Nyakagyeme sub-county plus Lugogo Bridge in the eastern division among other bridges.
He called upon people doing farming activities near these rivers to vacate because they have contributed a lot to the destruction of bridges due to poor farming methods.
Minister of security and the Rujumbura county Member of Parliament Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi said the inspection done in Rujumbura will yield much because different bridges were inspected and some roads like Kyaburere Road which is under renovation among others.
He said he will talk to ministries concerned to do the needful especially the challenge of having one grader which affects the maintenance of these roads.
Naboth Namanya of Rubabo County commended the good work done by both engineers of Rukungiri district and municipality regardless of some bridges being washed away by floods.
Hon Medius Kaharata, the Rukungiri district woman MP said there is a need for more culverts to work on the bridges that connect different areas in Rujumbura County as a preparation for the heavy rainfall.
The district engineer Engineers Julis Bagira and Hangson Nuwamanya revealed that they face the challenge of having no vehicle to help them in monitoring these roads hence asking the minister to lobby for them.
