Rukungiri District Education Department has expressed disappointment over the recently released Primary Leaving Examination (PLE) results, which revealed that 188 candidates were ungraded.

During a meeting with primary school head teachers held yesterday at the Rukungiri District main hall, Lydia Tushemereirwe, the Principal Inspector of Schools, voiced her concerns about the results. She emphasized the need for administrative revisions to improve academic performance and enable students to excel at higher education levels.

According to Tushemereirwe, success requires a collective effort from all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, and students. She urged school heads to take firm action against uncommitted staff, describing them as “toxic” influences that could jeopardize the future of children. Tushemereirwe also highlighted early pregnancies, drug abuse, and criminal behavior as key factors contributing to the 78 registered candidates who failed to sit for the exams.

Meanwhile, Keledonia Clare Musimenta Bakironda, the Rukungiri District Council representative and Minister for Education, praised schools that performed well in the exams. However, she encouraged underperforming schools to aim higher in the coming year. Musimenta urged school administrators to prioritize career guidance as a critical tool for shaping students’ futures, regardless of their education level. She pledged her support to provide career guidance if invited.

Musimenta also confirmed that several education reforms are underway to promote academic success. These include the provision and distribution of textbooks, regular meetings with schools, and other initiatives designed to strengthen the district’s determination to improve results. Expressing concern over the 78 students who failed to sit for the exams, she promised intensified efforts to address this issue and reduce the number of ungraded candidates in future examinations.

Out of the 6,686 registered candidates in the district, 713 scored in Division One, 3,690 in Division Two, 1,622 in Division Three, and 395 in Division Four, while 188 were ungraded, and 78 students were marked as absent.
