Rukungiri District has presented a draft budget of UGX 62.5 billion for the upcoming 2026/2027 financial year. The budget was unveiled during the penultimate district council meeting held today at the District Council Hall, Rukungiri District Headquarters, with various district stakeholders in attendance.
Secretary for Finance, Planning, and Administration, Gideon Ntunguura, highlighted that the district plans to spend UGX 62,509,689,000 in 2026/2027, a slight increase of 0.2% compared to UGX 62,498,783,000 in the previous financial year. He explained that the budget has been laid before councilors for review, with relevant committees expected to propose amendments. These proposals will be considered during the final council meeting scheduled for 8th May, after which the budget will be approved.
“The budget is designed to prioritize key sectors, and councilors are encouraged to examine it closely to ensure it meets the district’s development needs,” Ntunguura said.
Education received the largest allocation, with UGX 30,293,087,000, representing nearly half of the total budget. Other major allocations include Health with UGX 9,926,204,000, Production and Marketing with UGX 4,411,117,000, Roads and Engineering with UGX 1,871,049,000, and Water with UGX 978,640,000.
During the session, Deputy Speaker Karenzi Frank, representing Rwerere Town Council, commended councilors for their punctuality and urged them to study the budget thoroughly.
“Time is paramount in all our activities. Councilors should carefully review the budget and propose necessary adjustments to guide effective implementation for the 2026/2027 financial year,” Karenzi said.
The final approval of the budget will provide a roadmap for the district’s development priorities, focusing on education, health, infrastructure, and economic growth initiatives.
