Dr. Ninsiima Johnson, the Veterinary Officer in Rukungiri District, is urging residents who own cats and dogs to participate in the ongoing free vaccination campaign against rabies.

Rabies is a dangerous disease that can affect cats and dogs if they go unvaccinated for over three years, posing a risk of transmission to both humans and livestock.

Dr. Johnson disclosed that the vaccination campaign has recently covered Sub Counties such as Nyakishenyi, Nyarushanje, Buyanja Sub County, and Town Council. The upcoming schedule includes Nyakagyeme Sub County, with a team of doctors set to camp in the Parishes of Masya, Rushasha, and Nyakinengo on the 14th, and in the Parishes of Kahoko, Kabwoma, Kitimba, and Kigaaga on the 15th. These vaccination points will be established in public places such as trading centers, churches, health centers, and Sub County lands.

Highlighting the importance of the vaccination exercise, Dr. Johnson emphasized that it is crucial for preventing rabies infections, a potentially fatal disease. Byamukama Precious, the Veterinary Officer of Nyarushanje Sub County, expressed concern that some people may not be participating in the campaign, citing low turnout in their area where only 10 cats and 600 dogs were vaccinated in the entire Sub County.
