Residents of Kengoma village in Nyakitabire parish, Rukungiri district, have recently received a 5000-liter water tank, a crucial development in addressing their long-standing challenge of using unsafe and unclean water.
The generous donation comes from Hon. Medius Natukunda Kaharata, the Woman Member of Parliament for Rukungiri district. This initiative is part of her commitment, made during the belated Women’s Day festivity this year, to provide water tanks to schools, churches, and hospitals in water-scarce areas within the district.
Hon. Medius Natukunda Kaharata has already delivered over six water tanks to various sub-counties, with installations at locations such as Bwambara Health Center, Ndere Health Center, Rwaburara, Bunono Village, and Kengoma village, among others, with more to come. She urged the beneficiaries to safeguard the water tanks against vandalism and maintain cleanliness to ensure their sustained functionality.
Vanasio Mutesigensi, the catechist of Rukarakare Catholic Church, highlighted the community’s struggle with waterborne diseases due to using stagnant water. The introduction of these water tanks brings relief and the promise of a healthier living environment.
Local leaders, including Hellen Kabajungu, the Ruhinda sub-county chairperson, and Joweria Kobusingye, the deputy speaker of the same sub-county, expressed gratitude to their woman legislator for the timely provision of the water tanks. They believe that these tanks will significantly contribute to ensuring access to clean water for the community, especially when faced with challenges arising from the utilization of contaminated water sources shared among humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, potentially leading to diseases like malaria and typhoid.
