The Rukungiri district in Uganda is currently undertaking a foot and mouth disease vaccination campaign, which has presented significant challenges for the country. Livestock farmers across Uganda have reported substantial losses due to the outbreak of this disease.
Dr. Johnson Ninsiima, the Rukungiri district veterinary officer, stated that the district received 15,000 vaccines, an insufficient quantity to cover all domestic animals. Consequently, they have prioritized vaccinating cattle, as these animals are more severely affected by the disease compared to others such as pigs, goats, and sheep.
To prevent the spread of the disease, the vaccination process avoids gathering cattle in one location. Instead, the veterinary team visits each farm individually. They are focusing first on areas where the disease has been confirmed, starting with Nyakagyeme sub-county, then moving to the Eastern division in Rukungiri Municipality, and subsequently to Kebisoni.
Dr. Ninsiima mentioned that other areas will also receive vaccinations. The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, and Fisheries has promised to supply the district with additional vaccines in the near future.
