Agriculture extension workers from Nyakishenyi and Bwambara Sub Counties in Rukungiri District on Wednesday, 2nd October 2024, received motorcycles to facilitate their fieldwork. These motorcycles were provided by the Rukungiri District Local Government.
The district procured two DT-brand motorcycles, valued at 37,439,337 UGX, for the Financial Year 2023/24. The aim is to improve access to advisory services for farmers, thereby enhancing the quality of production.
The motorcycles were handed over to Plan Kanyesigye, the extension worker for Nyakishenyi Sub County, and Steven Karenzi, the extension worker for Bwambara Sub County, at the district headquarters.
Ms. Kellen Kagisha, the Rukungiri Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC), who presided over the commissioning ceremony, praised the government for this provision. She urged the beneficiaries to use the motorcycles responsibly to serve their intended purpose and expressed hope that the initiative would eventually cover all sub-counties in the district.
Micheal Byarugaba, the Secretary for Production, Marketing, and Natural Resources, commended the government for its efforts in improving service delivery. However, he noted that transport means remain insufficient for reaching farmers in all sub-counties and emphasized ongoing efforts to cover the entire district.
Rebbeca Koshaba, the Rukungiri District Communications Officer, welcomed the initiative, noting that it would enhance access to remote areas.
Mildred Kukundakwe, the Principal Agriculture Officer, emphasized that the motorcycles were procured to improve outreach to farmers and assured that proper care and monitoring would be maintained to ensure their longevity and effectiveness.
Steven Karenzi, the Bwambara Sub County extension worker, expressed relief over the resolution of transport challenges and reaffirmed his commitment to timely farmer outreach and responsible use of the motorcycles.
