Delegates from Rukungiri District have asked the top leadership of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to consider organizing elections at the regional level to reduce irregularities and challenges faced during the national exercises at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds in Kampala.

The call was made today during the National Youth and Entrepreneurs elections held at Rukungiri Main Stadium in Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.

In the day’s voting, Diana Ampaire Kampe was elected National Female Youth Member of Parliament with 22 votes, Tumwebaze Mwine became Western Youth Member of Parliament with 11 votes, Tanga Collins won the seat of Chairperson NRM Youth League with 16 votes, while Tuyizere JohnBosco was voted Vice Chairperson Western Youth League, among others.

Chrosositimu Byaruhanga Rwakana, the Chairperson of Entrepreneurs in Rukungiri District, expressed concern over congestion and lack of order during the Kololo elections, which he said fueled irregularities and even cases of robbery. He urged the NRM leadership to decentralize the exercise.

“The congestion and disorder we saw at Kololo created room for irregularities and theft. Moving elections to the regional level will help us achieve order and transparency.”

Levi Tukundane Napoleon, the District Youth Chairperson, also backed the idea, suggesting that voting for leaders should be conducted within regions to avoid “strange candidates without local connections.”

Meanwhile, Davis Mutabanura, the Rukungiri District NRM Administrative Officer, called on party members to respect the NRM constitution and avoid supporting independents, noting that unity strengthens the party.
