On November 30, 2023, Justice Tom Chemutai, the resident Judge of the Rukungiri High Court, handed down a 22-year sentence to Nagaba Alfred at Rukungiri government prisons. Nagaba Alfred, a 26-year-old resident of Rwere Cell, Nyakabungo Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, had been accused of the murder of Ahereza Edson Richard in 2021.
Ahereza Edson Richard, a resident of Nyabitanga Parish, Nyabitanga Sub County, Sembabule District, had parents who had migrated from Rwere Cell, Nyakabungo Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District.
The prosecution successfully demonstrated that in 2021, Nagaba Alfred and Ahereza Edson Richard had traveled together from Sembabule District to Rwere Nyakabungo Buyanja. Ahereza Edson Richard had been entrusted with delivering 3 million to their grandmother by his father.
Upon reaching Rwere Nyakabungo Buyanja, they passed by Dorcus bar in Omukentomi trading center, where they played cards. Nagaba Alfred returned home first, and Ahereza Edson Richard was later heard joining him.
The next morning, Ahereza Edson Richard was found dead on the road. Nagaba Alfred pleaded guilty, and Justice Tom Chemutai sentenced him to 22 years at Rukungiri Government Prison, deducting the time he had spent on remand.
