Rukungiri Municipal Councilors have resolved to compensate Rukungiri District for its share of Rukungiri Main Stadium to assume full ownership and improve management.
The decision was made on Thursday, December 19, 2024, during a council session held at New Palm Royale Hotel, located along Katerera Road in Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
The discussion sparked mixed reactions among the councilors regarding the stadium’s poor condition despite its significant revenue contributions.
Gideon Turyamubugana, the Kanyinya Ward Councilor, criticized the management team for mismanaging the stadium’s revenue collections.
Innocent Rubarondesa, the Kinyasano Ward Councilor, called for urgent measures to improve hygiene and repair the stadium’s perimeter walls to prevent disease outbreaks and further deterioration.
Lion MJF Prosper Tagobya, the Deputy Town Clerk and Chairperson of the Stadium Management Committee, explained that the committee has been unable to make progress due to a lack of funds.
Hon. Dr. Lion Elisa Rutahigwa, the Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, expressed sympathy for the councilors, highlighting that the stadium has no allocated budget. He emphasized that revenue collections have been transferred to the central government and reported his efforts to lobby the Ministry of Education and Sports for the rehabilitation of the stadium.
His Worship Charles Makuru, the Mayor of Rukungiri Municipal Council, reported that negotiations are ongoing with district authorities to involve the government valuer and determine the compensation amount for the district. This will enable the Municipal Council to assume full ownership and manage the stadium properly. The councilors unanimously adopted the decision.
