Locals and butchers from Rukungiri District have expressed worry over having a dull Christmas festival due to low morale and the limited number of slaughtered livestock.
They expressed the concern on 24th December 2025, during slaughtering at the main slaughter slab at Kagogo in Western Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
Ruth Natukunda, a resident, acknowledged low confidence in preparations for a successful Christmas festival, attributing it to poverty and high expenses.
Moses Nkwita, a butcher, highlighted a negative outlook on slaughtering, citing scarcity of livestock and low demand, which he says is causing losses due to the perishable nature of meat and high levies.
Boaz Niwetwesiga, another butcher, criticized the limited number of slaughtered livestock, totaling 29 compared to over 50 in the past, noting that the average demand poses a risk of losses.
Dr. Johnson Ninsiima, the Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer, confirmed the slaughter of 30 cows, 22 goats, and 24 sheep, and revealed ongoing efforts to apprehend butchers selling uninspected meat for legal action.
