RUKIGA- As the political climate in Rukiga heats up ahead of the upcoming elections, Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Zadock Kamusiime has urged residents to clearly distinguish between politics and hooliganism.
Speaking during a Rukiga District Council session held at the district Rukiiko Hall yesterday, Kamusiime expressed concern over the increasing incidents where some individuals are confusing hooliganism with political activities, warning that such behavior is becoming more dangerous as elections approach.
He pointed out that certain hooligans are being supported by the politicians they back, noting that when these individuals are arrested, their politicians often intervene to secure their release because they serve as their agents. Kamusiime called for peaceful elections.
His remarks follow the arrest of 18-year-old Allan Kanyesigye on July 31st, a resident of Kabirizi Village, Kitojo Parish, Rwamucucu Sub-county, and a supporter of Patrick Kiconco Katabazi, who is vying for the Rukiga MP seat. Kanyesigye was accused of libel against the current Rukiga MP, Hon. Rolland Ndyomugyenyi Bish, after allegedly circulating a document on social media claiming that Ndyomugyenyi is among the corrupt members of parliament.
Kanyesigye was quickly arraigned before the Kabale Grade One Magistrate’s Court and granted bail by His Worship Julius Mutabazi, with cash bail set at 300,000 UGX and non-cash bail at one million UGX.
So far, at least five candidates have expressed interest in the Rukiga County Parliamentary seat: the incumbent Rolland Ndyomugyenyi Bish, Capt. Damson Christmas Kivumba, Alex Magezi Kanuga, Counsel Patrick Kiconco Katabazi, and Lastone Besigye. For the District Woman MP seat, it remains a two-way race between the incumbent Hon. Caroline Kamusiime Muhwezi and Dr. Slyvia Alinaitwe Mwanaki, who is the Deputy Managing Director for Finance and Corporate Strategy at the National Water and Sewerage Corporation.
