Residents of Ruhinda Sub County in Rukungiri District have voiced concerns over the deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions at their Sub County headquarters and the nearby Rwenshaka Daily Fruit Market.
Residents report that public toilets are neglected, with human waste left unattended, and garbage, including polythene papers and rotting refuse, littering both the Sub County premises and the market area.
Rovina Tumusime of Nyarwimuka Parish expressed disappointment at the poor state of the Sub County offices.
Jolly Nankunda Kabaterine, a neighbor to the Sub County premises, said she struggles to manage garbage from her home and market without any support from the Sub County leadership.
Daphine Batungire, who lives close to Rwenshaka Daily Fruit Market, highlighted challenges caused by an unmanaged public toilet near her home, noting that feces spread during rainy periods, affecting nearby households.
Traders Ivan Tukahirwa, Edson Tumweboneire Kapigima, and Edward Tumusime criticized the Sub County leadership for failing to provide a public garbage disposal unit, citing that land intended for this purpose had been sold.
Constance Fatima Mutabazi, the market defense officer, condemned the careless disposal of waste, which she attributed to strict market rules that limit traders’ options for proper garbage management.
Kwizeera Gershom, the Sub County Chief, acknowledged the challenges, pointing out that high foot traffic due to national identity card registration and shared use of public toilets contributes to the increasing accumulation of waste.
Residents are calling for urgent interventions to improve sanitation and waste management, aiming to safeguard public health and maintain the cleanliness of both the Sub County offices and Rwenshaka Market.
