Traders of Rukungiri Municipality are criticizing the authorities at Rukungiri Municipal Council for allowing the consumption of contaminated water supplied by Rugarama water spring.
Rugarama water spring is located at the entrance of Rukungiri Municipality town, near North Kigezi Health Center IV, Rugarama. It has been neglected in terms of maintenance, hygiene, and sanitation for decades.
Mbabazi Kenneth, a mechanic service provider at Nyakibale tarmac road, expressed dissatisfaction with receiving food from hotels that fetch water from Rugarama water spring, calling it a death trap for cats and dogs.
Habibu Rubagasira, commonly known as Hamisi, a boda boda rider along Ntungamo stage, highlighted three water springs supplying water but identified Rugarama water spring as the main one with the worst water quality.
Ahebwomugisha Brave, a water supply service provider, clarified that the negligence comes from the users themselves.
Evas Asiimwe, the Rukungiri Municipal Council health inspector, explained that the water spring was constructed during the small towns policy/town council era. With the introduction of the Municipality and the arrival of National Water, its maintenance was phased out. She assured the public of urgent maintenance, considering the large population it serves.
