Mr. Andrewson Charles Katebire, the former Rukungiri District LC5 Chairperson, has urged SACCO overseers and operators in the district to strengthen safety measures to protect clients’ money and ensure institutional growth.
He made the appeal on Friday, 25th April 2025, while addressing members of Bwanda SACCO during their Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Bwanda Parish, Buhunga Sub County, Rukungiri District.
Katebire acknowledged the consistent growth of Bwanda SACCO and called upon the District Commercial Office to strengthen its advisory services in collaboration with SACCO service providers. He emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny of loan seekers and maintaining proper records to safeguard clients’ savings from misuse.
Caroline Atuhaire, the Rukungiri District Commercial Officer, urged SACCO leadership to lead by example through purchasing shares, saving, and prompt loan repayment. She also advised members to establish homestead income-generating projects rather than depending solely on SACCOs for income, which often leads to loan defaulting.
Byarugaba Michael, the District Secretary for Production, Works, and Natural Resources, who represented the LC5 Chairperson, commended Bwanda SACCO for offering quality services. He noted that Bwanda SACCO is one of the few institutions in the district free from major queries. He cautioned members against borrowing for luxury goods and services.
Nickson Biryomumisho, the Director of ZED Foundation—an institution of higher learning in the area—praised Hon. Mary Paula Kebirungi Turyahikayo for sponsoring 20 students in the Sub County. He credited her for boosting school enrolment and called on parents to collaborate with his office to maximize such opportunities.
Tinkimurekura Isaiah, the re-elected Chairperson of the SACCO Board, expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and pledged to focus on sensitization campaigns. His priorities include reactivating dormant accounts, promoting a savings culture, encouraging the purchase of shares, and advocating for responsible loan utilization to reduce defaulting and boost interest growth.
Kwikiriza Vitus, the SACCO Manager, expressed dissatisfaction with stubborn loan defaulters who waste both time and resources in court battles. He appealed for respect and adherence to SACCO rules and regulations.
