Family in Rubanda district is demanding justice after a suspect who assaulted their member was released from police custody under unclear circumstances.
According to Moses Bireje, the father of the victim, Kevin Akampwera, his son was assaulted by Sunday Edward (suspect) on 27th July 2025 in Kyitwego village, Nyarusheija ward, Kacerere town council, at around 9:38 pm.
It is said that Akampwera was rushed to Kacerere Health Centre II in critical condition, from where he was transferred to Muko Health Centre IV. His condition worsened, and he was transferred to Kabale Regional Referral Hospital for further medical attention. He was later discharged from the hospital and is now recovering from home.
Bireje said that with the help of Bufundi police, the suspect was arrested on 6th August 2025 and brought to Rubanda district police headquarters on 7th August 2025, where a case of assault was registered under file number CRB 272/25. To his surprise, he later saw the suspect moving freely in Kacerere town council. This prompted him to reach out to our reporter so that justice may prevail.
When our reporter contacted the Rubanda district police commander, SP Abel Barugahare, for a comment, he said that the suspect was released on police bond. He added that police bond is a constitutional right and no suspect should remain in police custody for more than 48 hours, regardless of the nature of the case.
He further said that the suspect’s case file was sent to the state attorney’s office in Kabale for further management.
