On Saturday, November 18, 2023, The Right Reverend Calist Rubaramira, Bishop of Kabale Diocese, officiated the commissioning of St. Peter’s Catholic Parish in Buyanja. The parish, situated in Katojo Ward, Buyanja Town Council, Rukungiri District, was established by carving out from Nyakibale and Ndama Catholic Parishes.
St. Peter’s Catholic Parish Buyanja includes Nyabicence, Nyakaina, Rwenkureijo, and Rwenanura Catholic Churches from Nyakibale Parish, as well as Rubanga, Kihengamo, and Ibumba Catholic Churches from Ndama Parish. The leadership is entrusted to Reverend Father Benjamin Tukamushaba as the Parish Priest, assisted by Reverend Father Crispino Mubangizi.
Bishop Calist Rubaramira emphasized the immediate commencement of full operations at the Parish and urged the authorities to establish a Parish Council within two months for efficient services. He called upon Christians to actively support the church, emphasizing that individuals of all ages share the responsibility of supporting God’s work.
During the event, Hon Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, served as the Chief Guest. He commended the Catholic Church for collaborating with the government on various development projects and encouraged Christians to contribute to the development of both their churches and government programs, especially the Parish Development Model.
Hon Midius Natukunda Kaharata, the Rukungiri District Woman Member of Parliament, expressed appreciation for the Bishop’s initiatives in poverty alleviation through programs such as schools, banks, and agriculture. She encouraged the community to embrace commercial farming as a key strategy in the fight against poverty.
Hon Mugume Rolland Kaginda, the Former Rukungiri Municipality Member of Parliament, praised Bishop Calist, describing Kabale Diocese as a model for the country. He urged the authorities at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish to prioritize the establishment of a health facility in the area, addressing a significant need in the community.
Dr. Edward Kazaire, the head of laity at St. Peter’s Catholic Parish Buyanja Katojo, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts that led to the establishment of the Parish. He acknowledged the hard work invested to meet the requirements, emphasizing that the development of the area warranted the presence of a Parish.
Reverend Father Benjamin Tukamushaba, the newly appointed Parish Priest of St. Peter’s Catholic Parish Buyanja, affirmed their commitment to sustaining and developing the Parish.
